"Chemical-Free", "Natural", "Handmade": Herbal Soap Marketing Terms Decoded
What do the words on herbal soap packs really mean? A no-nonsense guide to chemical-free, natural, handmade, Ayurvedic, SLS-free and more — so you can shop smarter online.

Shopping for soap online means judging a product by its listing. Here is what common marketing words actually mean — and the questions to ask.
"Chemical-free"
Meaning: nothing precise. Water, coconut oil and neem are all made of chemicals. Every soap is made through a chemical reaction.
Ask instead: which specific ingredients are left out? Useful, specific claims include "no SLS/SLES", "no parabens" or "no artificial colour".
"Natural"
Meaning: there is no legal definition for cosmetics in India. A product can be called natural with only a small natural content.
Ask instead: what are the first three ingredients? If they are named plant oils, that is a good sign.
"Handmade"
Meaning: made in small batches with manual pouring, cutting and curing rather than continuous industrial extrusion.
Why it matters: handmade soaps usually retain their natural glycerine and are cured for weeks, producing a milder, harder bar.
"Ayurvedic"
Meaning: in India, Ayurvedic medicines are regulated and licensed. Many cosmetics use "Ayurvedic" more loosely to mean "made with herbs used in Ayurveda".
Ask instead: which Ayurvedic herbs, and is it sold as a medicine or a cosmetic? (Anjenna Plus is a cosmetic soap made with herbs used in Ayurveda.)
"SLS-free"
Meaning: contains no sodium lauryl sulphate, a common synthetic detergent that some people find drying. True soap made from oils is SLS-free by nature.
"Grade 1" / "TFM 80%"
Meaning: a measurable claim. Total Fatty Matter of 76% or more is Grade 1 under the Indian standard. Higher TFM generally means more genuine soap per gram.
"Dermatologically tested"
Meaning: some testing was done on skin. The term does not say how many people, for what, or with what result.
A quick checklist
- Specific "free-from" claims beat "chemical-free".
- Named oils and herbs beat "natural extracts".
- A stated TFM beats "premium quality".
- A full manufacturer address beats a website alone.
